Should I Replace my Fluorescent Lights?

Many businesses and home owners ask if their fluorescent lights should be replaced. If you are looking at the long term investment the answer is yes! There are 3 different option when replacing fluorescent lights, detailed below.

Option 1: Replacing the whole fixture with LED

Replacing the whole fixture is usually a more expensive investment when replacing fluorescent fixtures. However, it is usually the best looking and provides the most cost savings year over year. With newer LED models — whether it’s an edge lit panel installed into drop ceiling, or an LED fixture hung off a chain, you get better light output in a smaller package!

Option 2: Replacing the Bulbs with Type A LED bulbs

The second option is to replace the fluorescent bulbs only (T8 and some T12) with Type A LED blubs. This option is usually the most cost-effective labor and material wise as it’s a straight replacement as long as the current fluorescent ballasts are in working condition.

Option 3: Replacing the Bulbs with Type B LED bulbs and removing the fluorescent ballast

Removal of the fluorescent ballast and replacement of the bulbs with type B LED bulbs is the lowest cost long term. This is also a convenient option to business and homeowners as the existing fixtures can be reused, and just replace the bulbs once they burn out. This also provides an easy to maintain option in the future.

In summary, all options are great for saving money, whichever option you choose will give you a great return on investment. If you have any further questions or want info on rebates through Efficiency Manitoba, send us a message and one of our Red Seal Electricians will reach out!
